MORE BBQ AND NEW BEER OF THE WEEK!
Q's BBQ - I heard good things about Q's from a few different people recently and decided to go check it out. Q's is located in downtown Lagrange on Lagrange rd. Q's is very similar to Smoque BBQ, which I reviewed in my last post. I went with the Texas brisket, Carolina pulled pork, mac and cheese, cornbread, and hush puppies. The brisket was very tender, I picked it up at one end and it literally broke in half. The pulled pork was good, a little dry, but not bad. Mac and cheese could have been a little more cheesy, but the crumble cracker topping was great. It might have been crumbled goldfish crackers. Cornbread and hush puppies were nothing special. One plus was they had 4 different BBQ sauces at your table. Sweet, Spicy, Vinegar based, and mustard based. Spicy was my favorite and the mustard was good with the hush puppies. Overall Q's was excellent, not quite as tasty as Smoque, but a better value. I would defiantly go back.
BEER OF THE WEEK
Breckenridge Vanilla Porter - This porter has a nutty, chocolate taste with a vanilla finish. This beer is made with real vannila beans from Papau New Guinea and Madagascar. It pours a dark brown chestnut color, almost black. Brewed in Breckenridge, Colorado.

First Weekly Post!
Hey everyone,
The Menu Master is back! I decided I'm going to change this blog up a bit. I will do one post a week, probably Wednesday nights and recap the best things I ate during the past week. Since I haven't posted in a while I will review the best things I ate in the past few months.
Smoque BBQ - The best thing I ate in the past few months would have to be the Brisket @ Smoque BBQ. Smoque is off I90 on Pulaski and was featured on a recent episode of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives so I decided to go check it out. Everything I ordered was excellent. I ordered a brisket dinner with mac and cheese and cornbread. Then for $3 you can add a taste of another meat. I went with the Texas smoked sausage. Both the sausage and the brisket were phenomenal. The brisket is smoked for over 15 hours. The mac and cheese was honestly the best Ive ever had. The cornbread was perfect too. I had a bite of the ribs and pulled pork. Both were just as good as the brisket and the sausage. Please, please go check this place out!
Jack Straws - Another great find was a place called Jack Straws located on Naperville Rd. in Wheaton. Jack Straws is mostly known for their pizza, but also have a collection of different cheese steaks and what they call Manburgers. I decided to go with The Bronson Manburger. The Bronson is two 1/4 pound hamburger patties, American cheese, gyro meat, tzatsiki sauce, bacon, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce. The first bite was incredible, you get so many different flavors in your mouth. The only negative thing I can say about this burger is that when you get to the last few bites, it gets unappetizing because your so full. Then, just when I thought the meal couldn't get any better, I get my favorite kind of fries, fresh cut and greasy, with a cheese sauce that Ive never come across before, merks cheese sauce. It was so sharp and creamy. I would go back just for this cheese sauce, but I will defiantly be returning anyway to try out some of the cheese steaks so stay tuned!
Anyways Baja Fish Tacos - Check out the summer specials menu at Anyways and order the Baja Fish Tacos. You get two beer battered haddock tacos topped with fresh chipotle cabbage slaw, tomatoes, and lime chipotle aioli. This mix of ingredients makes for a great fish taco. I'm not usually a cole slaw fan, but the chipotle slaw was fantastic. Anyways now has two locations, one in Oak Brook Terrace on Roosevelt Rd, the other in Bloomingdale on Army Trail Rd.

Adobo Grill - Ancho Chili BBQ Burrito
BBQ Burrito!
One of the few perks of working in retail is that other businesses like to bring you free stuff to let you know they are new to the area. As I mentioned in a previous blog (Adobo Grill - Pulled Pork Quesadillas) Adobo grill has put a new location in Wheaton. The manager brought over some free entree coupons just to let us know they are there. I have always said, the best food is free food. Since I tried a quesadilla last time, I decided to try one of their signature burritos. I went with the Ancho Chili BBQ Burrito. Now you can order this many different ways. I ordered it with grilled chicken, rice, pinto beans, hot habanero salsa, cheese, and sour cream. With this burrito you get the ancho chili BBQ sauce also. Its a very large burrito. The BBQ sauce is interesting, it defiantly isn't your average BBQ sauce. It isn't thin, but it isn't too thick either. It has a bit of a smokey taste to it. I enjoyed it. The salsa was not near hot enough though. If you have habanero salsa, I would expect something a little hotter. Overall though, It was pretty good. Not amazing, but it was something different. Normally the burrito was $6.95. $6 - $7 seems to be the standard price for an item there. I will base my score off that price, not the free price.

Anyways - Carolina Nachos
Pulled Pork On Nachos, Genius!
I went to my favorite restaurant on Friday, Anyways. Anyways now has two locations, one in Oak Brook Terrace on Roosevelt Rd and one in Bloomingdale on Army Trail Rd. I ordered the Carolina Nachos. The Carolina Nachos is a special item that is not on the main menu. If you don't see it, just ask one of the fine Anyways employees if you can order it. The Carolina Nachos have all the usual ingredients, but instead of chicken, ground beef, or steak, it has BBQ pulled pork! Anyways has great pulled pork and great BBQ sauce. The nachos are tri-colored for an American look I guess. You get plenty of all the different ingreiants. Some places like to skimp on the sour cream and quac. I don't know why more places don't have this on their menu already because its so good. Ever since this appetizer was created last year, I have probably ordered it 6 or 7 times. The Carolina Nachos are $6.99. Try it now!

Cheddars - New Orleans Pasta
Sausage, Chicken, and Shrimp in one dish!
A few Fridays ago I was headed to a friends house after a long day at work and I decided I was going to treat myself to a good meal. I stopped at Cheddars in Bolingbrook and ordered the New Orleans Pasta to go. This pasta dish consisted of penne pasta in a creamy cajun sauce with cajun spiced chicken, sausage, and shrimp. Onions and green peppers were also scattered throughout the pasta. It also included a piece of garlic bread. The pasta first off had a good flavor to it. It could have used a little more of the cajun sauce as a few of the noodles were bare. The pieces of onion were way to big in my opinion. The chicken was my favorite meat in the dish. The problem was I could only find two pieces. There wasn't too much sausage either, three small pieces. However there were about 8 pieces of shrimp, which seemed a bit overcooked. I would have liked it if they evened out the meat a little. Garlic Bread was a little soggy, possibly because it was in a take out box for a 1/2 hour. Over all I defiantly enjoyed it, there sure was enough of it, but I wish the chicken:sausage:shrimp ratios were better. The New Orleans Pasta was $9.99, a good price for a sit down restaurant pasta dish.

Taco Bell - Chicken Burrito
My Favorite Value Menu Item!
Ever since the Taco Bell Chicken Burrito was created and put on their value menu last year, it has become my favorite value meal item. For only .99 (some Taco Bells its $1.29) you get a small burrito packed with grilled chicken, seasoned rice, avocado ranch sauce, and cheddar cheese. The chicken tastes a little like rubber, but what do expect for something under a buck. Yes, its the smallest burrito Ive ever seen, but it fills your stomach up. When I do order it, I usually order two or get it with a chicken quesadilla and it is more than enough to fill me up. If you haven't tried it, do it now!

Yes, you heard me correctly, Chick-fil-A is headed to Chicago. They are planning to be put in Aurora, Orland Park, and Wheaton this summer. Chick-fil-A is known as one of the healthiest fast food restaurant chains in the country. I have never been to a Chick-fil-A before, they are mostly located down south, but the Menu Master is very excited!

Bonos - Meatball Sandwich w/ fries
New Menu Master Record!
I went food hunting again on my lunch break. I have been exploring Ogden road because its not an area I head to often, but its close enough to work. I drove past a place called Bonos. Bonos is located on Ogden Rd in Lisle. I'm not sure if its pronounced like Bonos name from U2 or Sonny Bono. If anyone knows let me know, including you Bo Jackson. This place doubles as a hot dog joint and a bar. I glanced at the menu, it was a usual hot dog place menu. Then I glanced at the specials. I decided to go with the Meatball Sandwich special. It came with fries and a drink. I ordered mozzarella cheese on top as well for $1 extra. A little pricey, but in my opinion you cant have a meatball sandwich without cheese. The kind lady brought my order out and set it on the table and man did it look beautiful. First off it was huge. Three meatballs stuffed into Italian bread covered in marinara sauce. On top was a thick layer of mozzarella cheese that looked like it had been baked in the oven. It was golden brown. I didn't feel so bad now paying the extra buck. I took a bite and it was delicious. Everything about it was just about perfect. It had the perfect amount of sauce and tons of cheese. Then I noticed the gigantic mountain of fries. My favorite kind too. Fresh cut fries with the skin still on em, greasy, but not to soggy. The price of the combo was only $4.99! The cheese brought it to $5.99, but still an incredible value. I finished everything except for a few fries and left extremely full. I will be returning for this again soon. Sorry, no pic right now, but I will add one next time I order this.

Culvers - BBQ Cheddar Double Butterburger
BBQCDRDBLBB!
I headed to Culvers for dinner last week. I decided to order a new burger they were offering, the BBQ Cheddar Double Butterburger. They do offer a single or triple as well. There is really not much to the burger. Its two patties with BBQ sauce and two slices of cheddar cheese. The BBQ sauce was not that great and there wasn't a lot of it. The cheese was cut so thin, I barely noticed it. It also wasn't as big as I thought it was going to be. There was no price on the menu. I was figuring the burger to be at least over $4, but it was only $3.39. I would have paid a little more for a bigger burger or I just would have gotten the triple. Overall, I wasn't to impressed with Culvers new creation, in fact, I have never been impressed by Culvers at all.
*Added note - Burger does come with raw onions. Not a huge fan of raw onion, so I ordered it without.

KFC - Original Recipe Double Down
You voted, I ate it!
Thank you all for voting last week on what I should eat next. The KFC Double Down was a winner by a landslide. As you might know already the Double Down consists bacon, a slice of Monterrey jack cheese, a slice of pepper jack cheese and what they call colonel sauce all sandwiched between two crispy boneless chicken breasts. I was afraid this sandwich might give me a heart attack. When I opened up the box, it wasn't as big as I thought it was going to be. KFC defiantly uses smaller chicken breasts than normal. I took the first bite, and was pleasantly surprised. It was good! The chicken is juicy and has that classic KFC seasoned taste. There is so much chicken you don't really even notice the extremely thin cut bacon. The cheese melts into the chicken very nicely. The colonel sauce is hard to explain. It gives the sandwich a bit of a zesty taste. I finished the Double Down fairly quickly and didn't feel sick like I thought I would. It did hit me about an hour later, but it wasn't too bad. Would I order it again? I dunno. Its a pretty heavy greasy sandwich. Probably only in certain situations would I order it again. The price tag was $4.99. $5 seems to be the new staple price for a large sandwich. So its right there with all the other ones. If it was any cheaper it would be a great value.

Patio - Beef Brisket Sandwich
Brisket Done Right!
I stopped by The Patio in Lombard for lunch last week. The Patio has several locations now and keeps growing every year. I decided to order the Beef Brisket Sandwich, something I have ordered several times before. The sandwich is piled high with sliced hickory smoked brisket and covered in BBQ sauce on a bun. The really great thing about this brisket is that it is sliced thick. Ive been to a lot of places and ordered brisket and its sliced too thin. The BBQ sauce at The Patio is amazing. They also put a bottle of it at each table. I recommend putting a little more sauce on it. The bun could be better, but its not bad. The sandwich is $5.49, not bad, not amazing, but it is quality meat and it defiantly fills you up. I would take this sandwich over a $5 sub any day.

Firehouse Subs - Smokehouse Beef and Cheddar Brisket Sub
New Sub Place!
So I guess there a new sub shop in town. Firehouse subs. Apparently its a chain, but its the first one in Illinois. This one happens to be in Danada Square West in Wheaton. It appeared to be there first days open. They had 12+ employees and 2 customers. As I walked in, everyone working at the time shouted in unison.WELCOME TO FIREHOUSE. I almost walked out, but i was hungry intrigued by the menu. I really cant stand when restaurants do that, I think its cheesy, and not in a good way. A simple hello will do. I scanned the menu. I decided to go with the Smokehouse Beef and Cheddar Brisket Sub combo. This sub is served hot with beef brisket, Cheddar cheese, mayo and deli mustard on a hoggie roll. It was about 9 inches long. I took it back to work to eat it there and when I dug in, all I tasted was the beef, which wasn't very good. It was kinda dry and had an odd taste to it. Super thin cut as well. I then realized they barley put any cheese on it. I had a hard time tasting any mayo or deli mustard either. I open it up and sure enough, there was hardly anything but beef. I am wondering if they made it incorrectly. I cannot say for sure. I would like to try this place again once they have been open a bit longer. As for now, not a good sub at all. I was kinda glad when it was gone. The total price for the combo was $7.88 which included chips and a drink. The sub alone was $5.89. A bit more than Jimmy John medium sized sub, but you do get it hot.

Buona Beef - Solo 9 inch BBQ Chicken Pizza
Solo BBQ Chicken Pizza
I wanted something lite for dinner, so what did I decide? Pizza of course! I decided to head over to Buona Beef for a individual size BBQ chicken pizza. The pizza is 9 inches and made when you order it. The pizza was brought to the table and it looked like the perfect size. It came with pulled chicken, BBQ sauce, red onion and cheese on top, all on a thin crispy crust. I must say it was better than I expected. The crust was perfect. BBQ sauce was great. It also did end up being the perfect size. I didn't have a hard time finishing it, but it didn't leave me hungry. The cost was $6.95, which I think is a great price for a 9 inch pizza with chicken on it. I will defiantly order this again.

Last week I was made aware that an Adobo Grill was opening close to my workplace in Wheaton. I have tried Adobo Grill before at another location, but not in a few years. Adobo Grill is like Chipotle, but with a little more variety. I decided to order the pulled pork quesadillas. I noticed after I ordered that the employee grabbed a tortilla the size of large pizza! This pleased me. The quesadilla came with pulled pork, cheese, and salsa in it. On the side you get sour cream, fresh hand squashed guacamole, and hot sauce for no extra charge. I dug in and noticed something I didn't like right away. The pulled pork was wet and slimy. It didn't make it inedible or horrible tasting, but It made it a little unappealing. I would recommend ordering chips because they do give you a lot of extra quac. The good thing about this quesadilla was the size. This was one of the biggest quesadillas Ive ever ordered. Scoobies - Cheeseburger w/fries
Scoobie Doobie Dont!
I went hunting on my lunch break earlier this week. No not actual hunting, hunting for a new place to eat. I headed down Ogden road thinking there would be something i have not tried. I finally found a place called Scoobies. Scoobies is a hot dog joint in Downers Grove on Ogden. The menu had nothing interesting. I heard from a food critic recently that you can tell a lot about a place by ordering the simplest item on the menu. So I decided to just try the cheeseburger. I placed the order and unfortunately they had it ready in a matter of seconds. Did I mention it was about 11 am and no other customers were there? Obviously they hadn't just grilled the burger. The burger was dry, had no taste, and while the fries looked like good seasoned fries, they also had no taste. The roll the burger was on was about the only good thing about it. I got a combo for $5.39. Not a horrible deal, but you'd think for that price you would at least get a semi-fresh burger. It also wasn't that big of burger.

John's Rib House - Giovanni Deluxe
I Don't Know Who Giovanni is, But I Like Him!
Thanks to Keri's hunger for rib tips Friday night, I was introduced to John's Rib House for some good BBQ. John's Rib House is located on Route 53 and Maple Ave in Lisle. I took a look at the menu at John's and decided what to order. I was pretty hungry, so I was looking for something heavy. John's has pulled pork, ribs, rib tips, chicken, catfish and even gyros. I then realized that there was only one guy working and he was preparing food for other customers while taking our orders. I was really having a hard time deciding what to get. Then I saw it. A sign made out of a white piece of paper hanging from the bottom of the menu, written in colored marker, Giovanni's Deluxe. What is the Giovanni Deluxe you ask? It includes: 3 rib tips ,2 chicken wings, 1 hot link, and 1 breaded catfish fillet. I tried the rib tips first. Awesome, meat was tender, not too much cartilage, BBQ sauce was thin with a little kick. I usually like a thicker sauce, but it was good. And as an added bonus, he gave me about 7 of them instead of 3! Next i dug into the chicken wings. Again, awesome. They had a crispy skin, but not over breaded. Meat again was tender and juicy. My only problem with it was that there wasn't a lot of meat on them. Next I tried the hot link. Oh boy, I was a big fan of this one. It was charred perfectly and it had a little heat to it. My only problem with this is that I didn't order another one! Next, the catfish. I don't order fish that often, but I do enjoy it. I wasn't the biggest fan of this catfish. The breading was soggy and greasy. It just wasn't very appealing. Overall it was the best BBQ I've had in a while. The price of the Giovanni Deluxe was $10.50. Not too shabby considering the amount of food. I did get the bonus rib tips, but even without them, I don't think a normal human being would be able to finish all this. Thanks to Giovanni for coming up with this collection of food!

Harry Caray's Lombard - Burger Bar
Cubs Opening Day Half Price Burger Bar!
Baseball seasons finally here, so some fellow Cubs fans (one sox fan) and I took a trip to Harry Caray's in Lombard, IL to watch the first Cubs game of the season. I wasn't planning on eating anything, I was just going to have a beer or two. That all changed when the bar tender told us that he would give us the March Madness special which included $2 bud lights and 1/2 price burger bar! It wasn't an actual burger bar, but it was more of a create your own burger type of deal. You choose the type of meat you want, then your seasoning, then cheese, then type of bun, then any other added toppings. I went with the regular sirloin burger with a cajun seasoning, gorzalany gorgonzola cheese, avocado, and hickory smoked bacon all on a pretzel roll. The burger came out and it was huge. I'm guessing it was a half pound, but it looked bigger than that. The burger was good. The pretzel roll could have been a bit more like a pretzel, a little too soft. It was cooked perfectly. My biggest problem with the burger was partially my fault. The gorgonzola cheese was really strong, and there was a lot of it. It overpowered the whole burger. I couldn't even taste the cajun seasoning because of it. I would suggest ordering it with a different cheese unless you like a lot of really strong cheese. Casey ordered a peppercorn crust and also said it was strong. The burger ended up being about $12.50, but since it was half price it came out to $6.25. A bargain for a quality 1/2 pound burger. The burger came with steak fries as well.

Taco Bell - Bacon Ranch Chicken Tortada
New Taco Bell Item!
I tried taco bells newest creation, the Bacon Ranch Chicken Tortada. Its Taco Bell attempt at a torta. Its a large tortilla filled with chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and ranch sauce. Its then folded into a rectangle and grilled. Its then cut into triangles. I took a few bites, it was OK, not much flavor, and it defiantly could use some cheese. I am a cheese maniac. I put cheese on everything. Yes, everything. I go through a can of parmesan a week. So maybe its just me, but I think if you added some cheese, this item could be good. I bought the combo they were offering for $4.49, which included the tortada, a taco, and large drink. Not a bad value, but they were charging $3.29 for the tortada alone. For Taco Bell that seems a bit over priced. I would order the Bacon Ranch Chicken Tortada again, but I would prob ask them to throw some cheese on it. I don't know if this is a limited time only item, but its worth a try if you want something new.

Times Square Cafe - The Gyro
First Review!
Today I visited the Times Square Cafe in Oak Brook, IL. It just opened recently, replacing the horrible D's Diggety Dogs. They labeled themselves as casual American and Mediterranean. The menu had a lot to choose from. Burgers, hot dogs, gyros, Italian beef, salads, and even ribs. I went with the Gyro. The gyro was very good. Tomato's were fresh. Sauce was great. Pita bread was perfect. The only problem I had with it was the size. The gyro was $6, which is about average for a gyro. At most places the meat is piled up so high you have to eat some of the meat with a fork before you can eat it like a sandwich. I was able to fold this gyro immediately. The taste made up for the size, but was left a little hungry. The overall service was good. Nothing to complain about.
